Statistically, Mac computers are less exposed to viruses than PCs. However that does not waive the need for adequate protection. On the contrary, security threats targeting Mac computers have increased significantly in 2008. According to the annual report published by security software vendor Intego, Apple issued a total of 35 security updates over the course of 2008.
As on a PC, preventive measures should include regular software updates, as well as the use of antivirus software and of a firewall. Mac OS X includes a firewall, and starting with Mac OS Leopard (version 10.5), Apple offers a second firewall which monitors software-level activity. This provides an additional level of protection and complements the network traffic security a standard firewall provides.
:: Integrated firewall and anti-phishing protection
As far as Internet browsing is concerned, the Safari browser installed on most Mac computers includes anti-phishing capabilities (version 3.2 and later). The same goes for the Firefox and Opera browsers. To check that the connection to a website is secure and get details on the applicable certificate, simply double click on the lock icon that indicates the communication is encrypted.
:: Free antivirus software
Free security software is also available for Mac computers. Virus scanner ClamXav checks your computer is not infected, while Avast ! Mac Edition and iAntivirus
provide real-time antivirus protection - Avast! and ClamXav are available in French. Macscan detects spyware on your computer.
Last but not least, if Windows is installed on your Mac, make sure both operating systems are protected.
